What you must know before your dermal filler appointment with Dr. Aaron Stanes

Dermal fillers are gels that add volume to the skin (i.e., they add volume to the area in which they are injected). They are temporary (they fade with time) and reversible (performed with a simple injection of dissolver).

Dermal fillers have a varied lifespan, lasting between 6 and 18 months on average. The type, as well as your natural metabolism, influences longevity. According to new research, fillers can remain for several years in certain people.

The exact qualities of the dermal filler utilised for your treatment will be assessed. These qualities should ideally be similar to the tissue being augmented by the filler.

More viscous (thicker) fillers stay longer, but putting them in the wrong place might result in an unpleasant appearance and feel. This is especially frequent when using filler designed to mimic bone in the lips to achieve longer-lasting results. This must be avoided.

There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach to dermal filler.

Depending on the areas of concern and the goals, each person will require a different type and volume of dermal filler.

The most crucial factors to consider while making an informed decision regarding your treatment are:

  1. Your tolerance for risk and downtime.
  2. Your budget (this will determine how much treatment is undertaken and thus how much of a result can be attained).
  3. Your expectations (how much of a result you want).

Concerning the cost and expectations around your treatment

In general, the higher your aspirations, the more you’ll need to spend, and the more extensive your treatment. If you have a low-risk tolerance or a limited budget, your outcomes will be more subtle.

Your treatment’s cost will be decided by a combination of the following factors:

  1. The affected areas
  2. The degree of difficulty for each area addressed.
  3. The extent to which each area has been treated.
  4. The product type required.
  5. The quantity of product required.
  6. Your expectations.

Cosmetic procedures are an art that is founded on inaccurate science. There will always be some variation in the results, no matter how competent your practitioner is. A qualified practitioner will do everything necessary to limit this unpredictability, but it cannot be eradicated.

Conclusion

In general, your outcomes should be as expected. However, results range from too cautious (‘I don’t see a difference or ‘enough of a difference) to overly aggressive (‘this looks false and unnatural). While finding the sweet spot in between is always the objective, being more conservative is better than being more aggressive. This is because administering further treatment is simpler and more predictable than undoing what has been done.

Treatment specific information:

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty (Nose Fillers)

  1. Overtreatment of the nose will result in distortion of the natural shape and contour and should be avoided at all costs. As a result, a minimum of 9 months must pass between nose filler treatments. The sole exception is a primary treatment ‘top-up’ that can be done within three months after your first visit with Dr. Stanes.
  2. Top-up treatment is required by 10-20% of patients.
  3. If you’ve had nose filler done elsewhere and it wasn’t done correctly, it may need to be dissolved before you have the non-surgical rhinoplasty with Dr. Stanes.
  4. The typical length of the outcome is 1-2 years, with the effect progressively wearing off over time.
  5. In general, the more treatments you receive, the greater the duration of your results (up to a limit).
  6. If you stop maintaining your results, they will eventually fade and your old nose will return.

Lip Enhancement (Lip Fillers)

  1. Overtreatment of the lips increases the chance of filler migration beyond the red border of the lip. This should be avoided.
  2. If a more prominent result is desired, it is better to get a lip enlargement in phases.
  3. If you have naturally large lips, you may not see a noticeable difference after your first treatment.
  4. There is no predetermined period when you should ‘top-up.’ Lip fillers can last for years, and topping up only because a certain amount of time has passed will result in overfilling. Assess the necessity for a maintenance treatment based on how your lips appear and feel to the touch.
  5. Everyone will require slightly different quantities. The 0.5ml and 1ml sizes are merely marketing vehicles. Very few people require these exact amounts.
  6. Be wary of clinics that publicly advertise 0.5ml treatments. Consider what happens to the remaining 0.5ml. Perhaps you’re getting the other half of someone else’s half-empty syringe of filler?
  7. Many of the lip filler treatment outcomes you see online are exaggerated due to inflammation. Certain approaches, such as the Russian technique, produce more prominent swelling, which might give the appearance of finely defined lips, but they do not produce better results.
  8. Lip augmentation should cause only minor discomfort if done correctly.

Under-Eye Treatment

  1. Under eye treatment can be complicated. Dark circles and hollows can occur as a result of a combination of poor skin quality/excess skin, skin pigmentation, and volume insufficiency of the cheek, temples, and under the eye. The best results will be obtained only by effectively addressing all factors.
  2. Dermal fillers alleviate volume deficiencies, however they are not for everyone (particularly those with poor skin quality).
  3. As part of your therapy, you may need fillers to restore volume in the cheeks and temples.
  4. Because of the fragile nature of the under-eye skin, injecting filler in this area should be done with caution. There is a considerable risk of lumps, swelling, and blue discolouration of the skin if too much filler is injected in one session.
  5. As a result, you may be underwhelmed by the degree of progress after your first session. This is common, as most under-eye filler adjustments require many visits.
  6. You may need laser, skin tightening, or, in rare cases, skin excision to further improve your under-eye area.
